The September $50,000,000 Powerball jackpot was a hotly anticipated event, and both Division 1 Powerball winners have come forward to claim their share! A grandmother from Keilor East in Melbourne and a father from Nambucca Heads in northern New South Wales. Both plan to give their families a good life with their once-in-a-lifetime windfall.
The first of our Powerball winners is a lovely Keilor East grandmother who wishes to remain anonymous. Eagerly, she was ready and waiting when lottery officials called her the day after Thursday’s big draw.
“I don’t need to sit down, I’m here and ready! I’ve been waiting a long time for this phone call.”
She explained that she had been playing Powerball for “many, many years” without having won anything. Nevertheless, the waiting clearly paid off! The winning 50-game Quickpick ticket was purchased from a local newsagency. The ticket brought her $25,000,000 in prize money after one game matched all six winning numbers plus the Powerball number.
When asked what she planned to do with her winnings, the generous grandmother immediately said she would give most of it to her family.
“I am going to buy myself a house… and give the rest to the kids and grandkids. They need it more than me. I’ll keep it a secret though… I just want to surprise them with the money!”

The second of our Powerball winners is a Nambucca Heads father who also wishes to remain anonymous. He wasn’t able to be reached by lottery officials the morning after the draw. But he soon got in contact once he realised he was $25,000,000 richer. “I was at work and I saw on Facebook that there had been a win in the region, so I thought I’d better check my ticket.”
“I just couldn’t believe it. I’m stunned. It’s beautiful!”
Similarly, the man purchased his winning 2-game PowerHit ticket from a local newsagency. A PowerHit meant he was guaranteed to match the Powerball and win prizes in multiple divisions. Therefore, this gave him the opportunity to take home an additional $611,427.60 in prize money from 19 Division 2 prizes. Of course that’s in addition to his $25,000,000 Division 1 prize!
He told lottery officials that the win “couldn’t have come at a better time”. His family had been having “a rough time” recently.
“With this win, I can take some time off work, buy myself a farm, and enjoy time with my family.”
The winning numbers from Powerball draw 1114 on the 21st of September 2017 were 26, 17, 2, 10, 25 and 23. Finally, the Powerball number was 5.
