Leap day was certainly lucky for one Cairns woman who accidentally bought two online tickets in a $4,000,000 Saturday Lotto draw – and won two Division 1 prizes!
“I only meant to buy one entry in the draw,” she said. “It was a mistake that has led to a big reward!”
She spoke to lottery officials on the 29th of February who confirmed that she had won not one, but two Division 1 prizes worth over $674,000 each, making her an accidental millionaire. The woman explained how she had logged onto her online account to buy a ticket and mistakenly selected both of her registered Saturday Gold Lotto games to play.
“I picked those winning numbers because they mean something special to me,” she said. Now they have even more significance.
After seeing the winning numbers from the draw and thinking they looked familiar, she logged in again and “freaked out” when she realised she matched all six numbers. In complete shock, she rang her sister and asked her to double check the numbers. It wasn’t until she got off the phone and checked the account again that she realised she held a second winning 4-game Standard ticket.
“I freaked out all over again!” she said. Following a day of disbelief, she told lottery officials that she now had a “spring in [her] step” and was already planning to use the winnings to buy a home. She also planned to share the prize money with her family.
A third Division 1 prize went to Queenslanders from Rochedale in Brisbane’s south. A pair of retired grandparents bought their System 8 ticket from a local newsagency and won prizes in multiple divisions totalling over $686,000.
The winning husband said they “just couldn’t believe it” when they checked their ticket on Sunday to find out they were Division 1 winners. “We’ve played those same birthday numbers for more years than I can remember,” he said, explaining how his wife insisted that they would win one day thanks to the law of averages.
He told lottery officials that his wife had turned to him and said “I told you so!” when they confirmed the win.
The couple said they were waiting for the right moment to share the good news with their family, and wished to remain anonymous.
The winning numbers from Saturday Lotto draw 3611 on Saturday the 27th of February were 38, 3, 22, 18, 21 and 5, plus supplementary numbers 27 and 45.
