Is Western Australia The Luckiest State In Australia?
3 min read
A family from the port city of Fremantle has come forward to claim their share of the mega $60,000,000 Oz Lotto jackpot, becoming the latest lotto millionaires in Western Australia and adding to the state’s mind-boggling winning streak so far in 2015.
Their winning ticket, worth just $30, was purchased from a local newsagency while the family was “out for a wander”. When the man checked his ticket at the newsagency following the draw and joked that he hoped the prize would be big enough to collect from the state lottery headquarters, the stunned retailer replied “You’re the one”. One of three, that is – there were three Division 1 winners in Australia’s biggest jackpot of 2015 who each took a share worth $20,000,000.
Like many down-to-earth Western Australia lotto winners, the family said they were “simple people” who planned to “buy a slightly more expensive bottle of red to celebrate”. They added that the money would be shared with family and allow them to make a “lifestyle change” and take a family holiday. The man said he “still couldn’t believe” that his impulse lotto ticket paid off.
“Our lives are never going to be the same and it could happen to anyone!”
The $20,000,000 prize is the third largest in Western Australia in 2015. The state has seen a string of Division 1 wins in the past few months, including the $50,000,000 Powerball winner in July, the $30,000,000 Oz Lotto syndicate winners in May, and the $10,000,000 Powerball winner only two weeks ago, which has finally been claimed by a Geraldton family.
It took over a week for the family to come forward with the winning ticket, which was purchased from a local newsagency. Although they had just been propelled to multi-millionaire status, the self-described “low key” family said there were no big splurges in their immediate future. Instead, they planned to use their windfall to renovate their house, take a holiday to visit family overseas, and donate to charities.
“We’ve had a wonderful life,” said a family member. “Now we can share our win with family and see the joy spread”.
In July, a self-described “hard-battling family” beat the odds to win Western Australia’s largest jackpot this year in the $50,000,000 Powerball draw. The family, located south-east of Perth in the suburb of Armadale, were the only ones to correctly select all six winning numbers plus the Powerball, and their efforts resulted in the incredible sum of $50,000,000.
The winning wife said they didn’t want the once-in-a-lifetime win to change them, but added that now they could do things they had only dreamed of in the past.
“Now we can pay off debt, take care of our family, and do some much needed home renovations.” She also stressed that winning such a large amount of money would give them the opportunity to donate to charity – something the family considered very important.
The other major Western Australian lotto win in 2015 was the $30,000,000 Oz Lotto jackpot in May, which went to a syndicate of ten members in the Perth area. Syndicate members bought individual shares in a System 12 ticket from a local newsagency and walked away with $3,000,000 each.
Details of two of the ten syndicate winners have emerged. The first was a mature aged couple from Perth’s southern suburbs, who were reportedly “overwhelmed” with their lucky win and planned to help their family financially, as well as taking a business class holiday for the first time.
The second winner was a woman from Belmont, who admitted she was in doubt whether to buy a syndicate entry or not – luckily, her gamble paid off! She always dreamed of winning lotto and said she now had some extra “shopping money” for her planned cruise holiday.
Western Australia’s winning streak could continue with the upcoming $21,000,000 Superdraw. In the last $21,000,000 Superdraw on the 1st of August, the state had the most winners nationwide with eight of the seventeen located in Dog Swamp, Yokine, Baldivis, Perth, Midland, Bentley, Hillarys, Maddington and Joondalup. With luck on your side, now is the time to buy your ticket in the next Superdraw – just in time for Father’s Day!
