How to Play Powerball

4 min read

Powerball is Australia’s biggest jackpotting lottery, reaching a record $150 million in September 2019. Whilst the game offers millions in prizes each week, unless you know how to play it, you won’t be in with a chance of winning the jackpot. Find out how to play Powerball, how to win and if you win, what happens next.

How to Play Powerball

1. Register an Online Account

Play Powerball online by registering an account with Oz Lotteries. This is a quick and easy process that you can complete in 30 seconds or less! Visit the Oz Lotteries registration page to complete this step.

2. Pick Your Powerball Ticket Type

Choosing your Powerball Ticket online is easy when you can read about each ticket option. The tricky part is deciding! Powerball online tickets options include:

Standard Ticket

A Powerball standard ticket is made up of 7 numbers and 1 Powerball number. Each game will give you 1 chance of winning. You can either randomly choose numbers using QuickPick or choose your own.

PowerHit Ticket

A PowerHit ticket guarantees you the Powerball number in every game. You can either QuickPick or choose 7 numbers, and automatically receive the Powerball. This ticket increases your chances of winning a prize.

Syndicate Ticket

You can also play Powerball in a Syndicate! The smallest syndicate is just $27 and buys you a share in a ticket worth $270 (10 x PowerHit’s). You don’t have to worry about organising it, we do that for you. Purchasing in a Syndicate increases your chances of winning while paying less for the ticket. It also means that you share your winnings with 9 other people.

System Ticket

Purchasing a Powerball System ticket allows you to play more numbers than the standard entry. It gives you every possible 7-number combination of your 8-20 numbers (depending on ticket size). Just like PowerHit and Syndicate tickets, a System ticket will increase your chances of winning.

3. Check the Powerball Results

Once you have registered and purchased your ticket, all you have to do is wait patiently for the Powerball results. You can either watch the draw live on 7TWO around 8:45pm AEST/9:45pm AEDT, check the Powerball results page or have results emailed to you on the night of the draw.

4. Verify Your Identity

Verifying your identity is an important step, but it is also the law in Australia. If you have a win, you can’t withdraw your winnings until you have been verified. This law is in place to help protect customers from fraud. This is an easy process through the Oz Lotteries website or app. Just find your account page and follow the easy steps for verification.

Note: If you reside in South Australia, you will be required to verify your identity before making a purchase.

Have I won Powerball?

7 winning numbers plus the Powerball are drawn every Thursday night. These numbers are drawn from two barrels with draw officials and a government supervisor present. The 7 winning numbers are selected from the first barrel, and the winning Powerball is selected from the second barrel. It’s always an exciting and nerve-wracking moment for our ticket holders!

How many Powerball numbers do you need to win?

To win Division 1 you need to match all 7 winning numbers plus the Powerball. However, you can win Division 9 with as little as 2 winning numbers plus the Powerball. See winning combinations for each division below.
