How to Play
Oz Lotto is a popular nationwide lottery with a guaranteed minimum Division 1 prize pool of $2 million and a record jackpot of $100 million!
A single game of Oz Lotto requires you to choose 7 numbers from 1 to 45.
Each Tuesday, 9 balls are drawn at random from 45 balls numbered 1 to 45. The first 7 balls are the winning numbers and the last 2 balls are the supplementary numbers. These supplementary numbers are used to determine prizes in Divisions 2, 4 and 7.
Oz Lotto draws close on Tuesdays at 7pm AEST/8pm AEDT.
How to Win
To win Division 1 you need to match your 7 chosen numbers in a single game with the 7 winning numbers from the draw.
A minimum of 3 winning numbers plus at least 1 supplementary number is necessary to win the lowest Division (7).
All winnings are paid into your account as a tax free lump sum.
The chance of winning a Division 1 prize in Oz Lotto is 1 in 45,379,620.
The chance of winning any division prize with a single game in Oz Lotto is 1 in 87. These odds improve to 1 in 7 when 12 games are played.
A standard game refers to each standard line of numbers you select for each lotto game. Each standard game of 7 numbers offers you a chance of winning one prize. You also have the ability to select your own numbers or Quickpick (auto-fill) each game.
A syndicate ticket allows you to share system entries and prizes with other players. Syndicates allow you to cover more numbers by sharing the cost between the members of a group. Playing more games increases the chance of winning a prize. If the syndicate ticket wins a prize, the total winnings will be divided equally among all of the members of the syndicate.
A system ticket allows you to play more numbers that a standard entry, it gives you an entry covering every combination of the numbers you have chosen. This type of entry will increase your chances of winning by playing a bigger range of number combinations.
Past Winner Update
As part of Oz Lotto’s 1000th draw celebrations in 2013, lottery officials contacted on of the 448 millionaires to find out how his life had changed in the years following his big win.
A man from the Townsville suburb of Thuringowa was the lucky winner of $20 million in Oz Lotto draw 812 in September 2009, and the memory of that exciting day still hadn’t faded.
“I couldn’t sleep for two weeks!” he said of the period immediately following news of his windfall. “Then I started giving some of the money to friends and family and it was them who couldn’t sleep because they were dreaming of how they could use it!”
The winner, who has remained anonymous to the general public with the exception of family and close friends, was in his thirties at the time. “We didn’t tell too many people initially. After I gave up my job, I still pretended to go to work for a while because the kids didn’t know we’d won Oz Lotto.”
He planned to pay off his mortgage, take a family holiday overseas, and set up his future. Upon reflection, he acknowledged that he might have caught the travel bug, saying he had “lost count” of how many times he’d been overseas. But it wasn’t all fun and games – the winner made sure to see a financial planner as soon as he received the prize money.
“I tried trading in shares for a while, then gave that away. Now I have a diversified investment portfolio including property.” His advice for what to do if you win lotto: “One – don’t be greedy, two – stop and think carefully about the future of your family, and three – have a plan to grow the asset over time.”
He used some of the prize money to start his own business helping other people manage their assets and grow wealth.
He laughed when lottery officials asked whether he still played Oz Lotto, and admitted to buying a ticket in the historic $100 million jackpot in 2012. Although he didn’t win anything, he said that “it was nice to see a family in Townsville nearby share in that prize.”
